“Almost there.” Brea clasped Alona’s hand. Her human sister was exhausted, and Brea’s magic couldn’t help her.

“I’ve got her.” Griffin swept Alona up in his arms to carry her the rest of the way.

The muddy waters of the Vatlands began to dry up as they entered the rolling hills of the Eldurian border.

“We’re nearly home, Lona.” Brea couldn’t hide her smile. She’d once thought she might never see Eldur again. This place was in her blood. It made her come alive.

“Halt right there!” A row of soldiers on horseback aimed their weapons at Brea and her weary companions.

Brea beamed up at the soldiers she’d expected to see wearing her mother’s colors. “We made it! Please take us to the border camp, I must speak with whoever’s in charge.” But as she took another look, she realized these men and women wore Iskalt colors.

“Silence!” The leader moved to strike her, and Griffin charged forward.

“Wait!” Brea held him back. “You don’t understand.”

“I said silence, woman.” The soldier dismounted his horse.

“Okay, then, I guess we’re doing this the hard way.” Brea and Griffin stood united between the soldiers and Brandon and Alona.

“On your knees, you filthy cowards.” The soldier drew his weapon and held it at Griffin’s throat.

Brea held her hands up as she and the others sank to their knees in the mud. This was not the reception she’d hoped for.
